Being in the Room Where it Happens: Power, Invisibility, and Silence
On March 27, 2023, the Miller Center on Policing and Community Resilience hosted an event at the Boca Raton Museum of Art featuring Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway.
President Holloway delivered the annual Paul S. Miller Distinguished Lecture, drawing connections between his own scholarship and the Miller Center’s mission to protect vulnerable communities.
“Thank you to John Farmer and to the Eagleton Institute for their incredible work. My assistant who I’ve been working with for nine years, knows if I’m having a bad week, she will say ‘I put students on your calendar two days from now.’ And more often than not, I’m actually meeting students at Eagleton. So that’s always a happy space for me,” said President Holloway.
President Holloway spoke with Rutgers alumni at the event about the phenomena or challenge of visibility. “At the highest level, I’m working through how the things that we don’t see, as opposed to things we can’t see, affects how we go through life, assign authority… and how we navigate the consequences along,” said President Holloway.
“Eagleton was founded 66 years ago, as a place to put the theoretical study of politics to practical use. Our work encompasses the entire spectrum of politics – from promoting idealism and civic engagement to our groundbreaking research about the role of underrepresented populations. We study all aspects of the political spectrum, including how politics break down, ” said John J. Farmer, Jr., Director of Eagleton and the Miller Center.
“The work of the Miller Center is vital to the study of how politics break down. The center studies how diaspora populations protect themselves. We found that these populations are vulnerable precisely because they go unrecognized,” said Professor Farmer.
The Center identifies and disseminates best practices, offers training workshops, consults on security and civil liberties, and undertakes research to assist vulnerable communities to enhance their safety and standing in society by improving their relationships with law enforcement, with other government agencies, and other vulnerable communities.
