Excerpt from Miller Center Director John Farmer’s Opinion Piece in The Messenger, published 10/29/2023:

What is needed — especially given the current disposition of the Supreme Court and the dysfunction in Congress — is the creation of a civic trust, formed and funded by the platforms themselves but standing independent of them, modeled on innovations like the Motion Picture Association’s film rating system or the National Center For Missing & Exploited Children. The trust would be composed of independent experts and researchers, who would stand apart from the platforms and the government, and be charged with identifying and calling out speech that promotes verifiable falsehoods or extremist ideologies, or threatens public safety. The warnings issued in the name of that civic trust would be posted on the platforms, along with the problematic speech, so that social media consumers would be aware of how their views could be manipulated.
