Prominent Universities, Associations, Agencies Explore North American AI Landscape In Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Security

Experts Weigh in on Technology, Applications, Threats, Accountability, Trends in 2-Hour Webinar

August 28, 2024: How is AI transforming how crimes are committed, investigated, and prevented? How well are law enforcement and security adopting AI tools or responding to AI attacks? Experts in the use of AI in law enforcement, criminal justice, and private security across North America addressed these issues today in an eye-opening webinar that featured both successes and challenges as we head into an age of ubiquitous AI.

Panelists—law enforcement executives, security professionals, technologists, and policy makers—explored applications, threats, governance, future trends, and other issues. Presenters focused on issues specific to each industry—law enforcement, criminal justice, and private security— while also bridging the silos among the three.

“Like any revolutionary technology, Artificial Intelligence can be used for good or for criminal purposes, but it must first be understood, ” said John Farmer, Director of the Miller Center on Policing and Community Resilience.  “Today’s session, in exploring the potential implications of this disruptive technology, is an important early step toward developing that understanding.”

“Feedback from the hundreds of agencies, departments, and professionals who attended the session was extraordinary,” said Paul Goldenberg, who presided over the event. Goldenberg, who holds senior roles at the Miller Center on Policing & Community Resilience at Rutgers University, the Professional Development Institute of the University of Ottawa, and Global Consortium of Law Enforcement Training Executives (GCLETE), added that the panelists addressed in real time a range of critical issues posed by moderators as well as by attendees who posted questions on the platform. “It turned out to be a well-balanced and insightful program that tackled many of the thorniest issues of AI,” Goldenberg concluded.
